How to clear a stuck print queue
Start with the queued job and the connection. Restart or clear the spooler only when ordinary cancellation does not work.
Check the printer before clearing anything
A queue can be waiting because the printer is offline, out of paper or showing a hardware error. Check the printer display, paper tray and connection first. In Settings → Printers & scanners, open the affected printer’s queue and cancel the stuck job. Check that you are sending to the correct printer rather than an old duplicate queue.
Restart the printer and the spooler
Save your work, power the printer off, wait about 30 seconds and turn it back on. If the job still will not cancel, restart the Windows Print Spooler service. Restarting the service briefly affects printing on this computer.
- Search Windows for Services and open the Services app.
- Find Print Spooler, open its context menu and choose Restart. Administrator permission may be required.
- Reopen the queue. Send one small test page before retrying the original document.
If jobs still cannot be removed
Microsoft’s manual reset procedure stops Print Spooler, deletes the files inside the Windows spool PRINTERS folder, then starts the service again. This removes pending jobs for all printers managed by that local spooler. Make sure you can resend them, and on a shared or managed computer let the administrator handle it.
Delete only the queued files described in Microsoft’s instructions, not the PRINTERS folder itself or unrelated Windows folders.
If the queue gets stuck again
Try a simple document from another app. If that prints, investigate the original file or application. If every job fails, return to the connection and driver checks. Note whether the new job stays queued or disappears without printing; that will help narrow down the problem.
A new small print job completes and disappears from the queue.
Common questions
What should I try first when a print job will not cancel?
Confirm that you opened the correct queue, cancel the stuck job, and check the printer connection. If ordinary cancellation fails, follow Microsoft's spooler restart and clearing instructions. Save the source documents first; clearing a queue removes queued jobs.
Does clearing the print queue uninstall my printer driver?
Clearing queued jobs is separate from uninstalling a driver. It removes pending print work. If jobs immediately become stuck again, test a small document and check the connection before changing software.
