Brother toner vs drum: what to replace on the HL-L2350DW
The HL-L2350DW uses a separate toner cartridge and drum unit. A toner message points to the toner supply; replacing the drum does not refill it. Read the exact message before buying either part.
Two parts with different jobs
The toner cartridge holds the powder used to form the print. It fits into the drum unit, which transfers the toner during printing. Brother instructs users to separate the assembly and replace the consumable that has reached the end of its life. Changing one does not automatically mean changing both.
Some sellers use “toner” or “drum” loosely in listing titles. Confirm the part number and what is actually included.

Use the message to choose the next check
Record the message exactly as it appears on the printer or in Brother software. A faint page on its own does not identify which part needs replacing.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Toner Low | Prepare the correct replacement toner. This is not a drum-replacement instruction. |
| Replace Toner | Follow the model’s toner replacement instructions and use the correct regional cartridge. |
| Replace Drum | Check the drum replacement procedure. Buying toner alone does not replace the drum. |
| Faint or marked prints, without a clear replacement message | Use the print-quality checks in the model’s manual before ordering parts. Paper, settings and several components can affect the result. |

US part numbers for this model
Brother’s US listing names TN-730 standard-yield and TN-760 high-yield toner. The separate drum is DR-730. TN and DR identify different purchases in this example. The UK listing uses other numbers; use the regional compatibility guide below if the printer was imported.
Before replacing anything
Open the replacement instructions for the exact model from Brother’s support page. Keep toner replacement and drum replacement as separate tasks.
- Check the full model, sales region and part number on the replacement package.
- Follow the manual’s handling and installation sequence. Replace only the part identified by the instructions and your observed message.
- If the drum procedure includes a counter reset, do it only as directed after fitting a new drum. Resetting a counter does not renew a worn drum.
- Print a fresh test page and check both the message and the output. If the message remains, check the installation steps before buying a second part.

You know whether you need toner or a drum, and have matched its number to the regional model. If the symptom is unclear, use the manual’s print-quality checks first.
Common questions
Do I need a new drum every time I replace toner?
No. The HL-L2350DW uses separate parts. Follow the printer’s message and the model-specific replacement procedure; replacing toner does not automatically call for a new drum.
Will resetting the drum counter fix worn parts?
No. A counter reset records a replacement; it does not add toner or restore a worn drum. Follow the model’s instructions when a new drum is installed.
