A driver is blocked: check the source and the message
Read the full Windows warning, then check the download’s source, publisher and supported system. The next step depends on the message.
Read the exact warning
Windows can warn about an unfamiliar app, an unverified publisher, an incompatible driver or a security policy. These are not interchangeable. Record the exact message and where it appeared before changing settings or downloading another package.
Start again from the manufacturer’s support page
Find the exact printer and OS on the manufacturer’s site. Follow that page’s download link and compare the release details. Manufacturers may use more than one download domain, so follow the link from the support page instead of relying on a familiar filename.
Check compatibility and publisher information
Where Windows exposes it, inspect the installer’s Digital Signatures information and compare the publisher with the manufacturer’s guidance. A valid signature does not guarantee support for your OS. If the publisher or release cannot be established, pause and ask the manufacturer rather than bypassing the warning.
Choose a supported installation method
Check whether Windows Update or Add device supports the model. For a printer requiring a legacy driver, follow the manufacturer’s OS-specific instructions. Do not disable signature enforcement, antivirus or other protections as a routine installation step. On an organisation-managed PC, use its approved support route.
The file’s source and OS support are established. If they cannot be established, use the manufacturer’s support route.
Common questions
Should I turn off driver signature checks to install a printer?
Do not make disabling security the default fix. Record the exact warning, confirm the official release and publisher, and check the OS and architecture. If the package is blocked or unsupported, look for a supported manufacturer release or ask your administrator.
Does the right filename prove a printer download is safe?
No. A filename can be copied. Start from the manufacturer's official support page and compare the model, OS and publisher information. Use the download link on that official page.
